Destin Mayor Sam Seevers has been appointed by Governor Rick Scott to the Governor’s Commission on Community Service, also known as Volunteer Florida. The commission’s focus is to develop, promote and implement volunteerism and service throughout the state.
“It is such an honor to be selected to serve on this wonderful and worthwhile commission,” said Seevers. “Community service is and has always been my passion. I look forward to collaborating with the commissioners on ways to enhance volunteerism and promote a cohesive environment in our great state.”
A recent letter from Scott to Seevers explained his responsibility to appoint qualified and ethical individuals to boards and commissions and expressed his confidence in her ability to serve the commission with excellence and distinction. The letter also thanked Seevers for her willingness to serve the people of Florida.
Commissioners are chosen because of their active roles in volunteer and service activities in their communities. They are a diverse, bipartisan group of citizens appointed by the governor, who may serve two- to three-year terms and may be appointed for consecutive terms.
Seevers is owner of Life’s a Beach Publications, LLC., and mayor of the City of Destin. She joins 18 other appointees from across the state on the commission. Her term began Nov. 8, 2012, and runs through Sept. 14, 2014.
Volunteer Florida, the Governor’s Commission on Community Service, was established in 1994 by the Florida Legislature to administer grants under the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. The commission grants funds to Florida AmeriCorps and National Service programs; coordinates volunteers and donations in a disaster; and inspires all Floridians to serve their communities.
