Destin, Fla. – Earlier this week, the City of Destin learned that some shops at the Destin Commons are now charging a “Destin Municipal Tax.” Collection of this tax is absolutely unauthorized and unsanctioned by the City and the Destin Commons did not coordinate with the City prior to allegedly levying such a tax. In reality, the City understands that the “tax” is an “Arts and Entertainment Fee” which the Destin Commons itself has the ability to charge its customers. The “Arts and Entertainment Fee” has no connection with the City. Therefore, the City of Destin demanded that the Destin Commons and any businesses erroneously collecting, or referring to, such a "municipal tax" immediately cease and desist from same. Such actions are clearly unauthorized and misleading to the public. It is the City’s understanding that any reference to a municipal tax was in error, and that the Destin Commons and its businesses involved are actively working to correct the matter.
