[ARCHIVED] Highway 98 Widening Project in Destin to Begin Sept. 5, 2017

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) Highway 98 widening project in Destin is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 5. This project is managed by FDOT and is slated to take 1,220 days to complete (November 2020).

Construction will begin on the west end of the project near Airport Rd. with median demolition and widening the existing eastbound travel lanes toward the median and the south side of the eastbound roadway. The retaining pond just west of Scenic Hwy. 98 will be excavated and the retaining wall adjacent to the roadway and median fill will be constructed with the material removed from the pond. Other work, including street lighting and utility relocation, will also take place.

Below is important information regarding the project and road closures.

  • Nighttime lane closures will begin Sunday, Sept. 10, and continue through Thursday, Sept. 14. There will be no lane closures from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • All planned lane closures require a 14-day notification. Notices will be found at https://lcis.dot.state.fl.us. The city will share this information on its website and Facebook page.
  • An Emergency Evacuation plan will be established. Lanes will be reopened within 12 hours of an evacuation notice.
  • The county will install an additional southbound, left turn lane at the intersection of Matthew Blvd. and Hwy. 98.
  • New ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) signs east and west of Danny Wuerffel Way will be installed as part of this project.
