The City of Destin has awarded April Nickens the 2016 Employee of the Year Award, the city’s top staff honor. Nickens was presented the award at the city’s annual Christmas Party and will receive recognition for her accomplishment from the mayor and city council at the Jan. 3 council meeting.
Nickens joined the city in March 2015 as the accounts payable administrator in the finance department. She is responsible for performing administrative duties and serves as the primary point of contact between the finance department and the city’s vendors. Under the direction of the finance director, Nickens performs a variety of accounting-related activities such as purchase order processing, accounts payable processing and staff payroll, to name just a few.
“I am honored and humbled by this award,” said Nickens. “I attribute my success to my coworkers and the wonderful work environment at the city of Destin. I work with the best team ever, and I look forward to many more years of service.”

The City of Destin is blessed to have April as part of our team.”
In addition to her recognition at the city’s Christmas Party and the Jan. 3 council meeting, Nickens has received a certificate of recognition from Congressman Jeff Miller, her name etched on a plaque and a reserved parking place at city hall for 2017.
The Employee of the Year is selected by a committee from nominations made by coworkers. The award is given to the individual who best exemplifies the city’s staff mission to provide quality service to the community through professionalism, communication and teamwork.
