[ARCHIVED] City of Destin to Begin Annual Tree Trimming

The City of Destin will begin its annual roadway and pathway tree trimming in the next two weeks. Public Services crews will trim vegetation not in compliance with the city’s Code of Ordinances. The project will start on the east end of town (Crystal Beach area) and move westward over the next three months.

The city requests property owners perform trimming themselves as required by the Code of Ordinances. Staff will work with each property owner as needed to explain the requirements. Clear pathways are essential for both vehicles and pedestrians. They must allow easy and safe access as people travel through town. Vehicles such as school buses, ambulances, RV’s, fire trucks and delivery vehicles require higher clearances than passenger vehicles and must be able to travel the roadways without hitting vegetation. Sidewalks must be clear to avoid injuries to pedestrians. General requirements are as follows:

• Roadways must have a 15-foot high clearance and a minimum one and a half foot clearance to the sides of the roadways.

• Sidewalks, recreational trails and multi-use paths must have a 10-foot high clearance and a one-foot clearance on both sides of the walkways.

Crews will also address “vision triangles” at intersections to allow proper sight lines for vehicles. These “vision triangle” requirements are determined by the type of road and the speeds allowed on the road.

Please contact the city’s Public Services Department at 837-6869 for more information.
