Mayor Sam Seevers and the Destin City Council recognized the Destin Beach Safety Lifeguards at the Aug. 6 city council meeting for winning the 2012 James McCarthy Memorial Southeast Regional Lifesaving Championship. This was the third year in a row the Destin group has won the competition. The event was held July 19-21 on Okaloosa Island.
The Destin Beach Safety Team scored 698 points, the most ever for a Southeast Regional Championship, with Phil Lloyd from Destin winning the male high points score. The team will advance to the national competition in New Jersey later this year.
Mayor Sam Seevers presented the team with a proclamation recognizing their dedication to watching over Destin's beaches, keeping residents and visitors safe.
