[ARCHIVED] Flash flood watch issued for the City of Destin and surrounding areas

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for our area from 1PM this afternoon through Sunday morning. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to increase in the area beginning this afternoon and total rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are predicted.
While predictions vary considerably, and some weather services are predicting lower totals, the ground is saturated and our water table is very high. Residents in areas that have recently been prone to flooding are urged to ensure that flood damage materials and yard debris are not placed over drain inlets or blocking outfalls.
Public Service crews will be pre-positioned to move pumps to flooded roadways and enclosed drainage basins. Sand is available at the east end of the parking lot of the Public Services building on Commons Drive; up to ten (10) sand bags per household are available at the Public Services facility until 7PM this evening. Anyone wishing to fill sand bags as a preparatory measure is urged to bring their own shovel. If you see debris or other materials that is blocking a drain or outfall, please contact the City at (850) 837-4242.
