The Destin Fire Control District Beach Safety Competition Team was recognized during the Destin City Council’s September 17 meeting for its achievements in the Lifesaving Association (USLA) National Lifeguard Championships in Manhattan Beach, California. The team finished second in the Small Beach Patrol Division (agencies with less than 100 lifeguards).
Mayor Sam Seevers presented a proclamation to the team on behalf of the city recognizing them for their achievement and honoring them for their hard work and dedication to protecting the people on the Destin beaches.
The USLA National Championships is a unique athletic event that allows participants to demonstrate techniques for lifesaving and acquaints the general public with water safety procedures and skills used daily by professional lifeguards to advance public safety at the beach.
Eight members of the Destin Fire Control District Beach Safety Competition Team participated in a series of competitions over three days to determine who the top lifeguards are for 2013. The competition included water and beach course events that challenged their lifesaving skills from surf swims to beach runs, paddle boards to surf boats.
